A contemporary of Mussolini, Hitler, and Stalin, Franco died in 1975 after ruling Spain for 36 years. This documentary follows his rise from second lieutenant to Generalissimo of the army that defeated the popular front government in the Civil War. The war left Spain in ruins, with one million dead and many more refugees. Franco survived the Second World War by his anti-Communist stance, which solidified ties to the West during the Cold War. Western investment transformed Spain into an industrial nation, but not a democratic one. Francos last dream was to secure his role as savior of Spain through the restoration of the monarchy. For many, Franco personifies the age of dictators and the disturbing appeal of fascism. (25 minutes)
