Pituitary Tumor Surgery

Neurosurgeon Edward Laws removes a tumor from the pituitary gland of a 61-year-old man with acromegaly—the progressive enlargement of hands, feet, tongue, and facial features. The deformities are caused by an excess of growth hormone—in this case, by the tumor pressing on the gland. Dr. Laws enters the area of the pituitary gland through an incision in the nostril and, removing nasal septum bone, exposes the gland. The tumor is removed through a second incision in the upper lip. The removal of the tumor halts the flow of growth hormone, and the signs of deformity begin to disappear. A Discovery Channel Production. (47 minutes)
