Part 1: The Roots of War

This program traces the economic and political roots of the Gulf War. Arab officials, including the Prime Minister of Kuwait, discuss historically bitter feelings between Iraq and Kuwait. Shortly before the war, the dispute took the form of Iraqi demands for Kuwaiti land, and Kuwaiti threats to lower oil prices in the region. Jordan attempted to mediate the dispute, but the U.S. undermined a peace plan proposed by the late King Hussein. Former Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz, and Prince Bandar of Saudi Arabia comment. (50 minutes)
