The Chemistry of a Forest

A 30-year study at the Hubbard Brook experimental forest in New Hampshire has taught botanists, organic chemists, and environmentalists the complexity of an ecosystem impacted by rainfall, sunlight, airborne chemicals, and controlled timber harvests. By studying the minerals in the watershed soil and stream water of this remote area of the White Mountains, scientists have been able to document that acid rain is not just a local phenomenon, but one that can have far-reaching, global effects. Produced by the Open University. (25 minutes)
