The Rise and Rise of Bill Gates

In 1992, the market value of Microsoft—the tiny startup founded by Harvard dropout Bill Gates—exceeded the value of General Motors. Since then, Gates, the high-tech wunderkind, has amassed a huge personal fortune and become one of America’s most influential and controversial corporate players. This program examines Gates’s forceful management style against the backdrop of allegations that Microsoft monopolized the personal computer market. In addition, a description of his aggressive merger tactics by a Novell executive offers an intriguing counterpoint. The program also examines the opening moves in the FTC’s investigation of the software giant. A BBC Production. (40 minutes)
