Cristian: Age 14 (05:12)
Cristian wants to play professional basketball in the NBA, and is no longer close to his father who remains in Mexico. When he turns 16, Cristian decides to quit the basketball team. In his senior year of high school, he discovers that he cannot go to college or get a job because he is not a U.S. citizen.
Cristian: Age 18 (06:26)
Cristian's relationship with his father is strained because he does not want to come to the United States. Cristian wants his future children to know he will always be there for them. Recently, Cristian obtained a work permit and started taking college courses.
Gwenth: Age 13 (03:40)
In Vietnamese culture, a child talking back to a parent is a sign of disrespect. Gwenth's parents worry that American culture influences her negatively. After her parents began to stalk her, she called Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.
Gwenth: Age 16 (03:37)
Gwenth joined the Vietnamese Student Association of Shorewood Community College. She left home at age 16. At age 22, she fell in love with an American man, but they are on "shaky ground."
Gwenth: Age 22 (05:34)
Gwenth's father physically abused her during her sophomore year. She works to support herself in project management. While she is not on speaking terms with her father, she communicates with her mother.
Prottush: Age 7 (04:07)
Prottush cannot become President of the United States, because he was born elsewhere. The Muslim community received a lot of backlash after September 11th. Prottush goes to Arabic School on the weekends to learn about his faith and language.
Prottush: Age 17 (04:21)
Prottush describes differences between Bangladeshi and American culture. The media misrepresented Muslims after September 11th. Prottush wishes that all children could identify with their culture and have the opportunity to express themselves through music.
Prottush: Age 22 (04:49)
Prottush attended the University of Washington and broke up with his girlfriend while he was on a road trip. He does not identify as Muslim. He feels rooted in his culture, but uncomfortable with the religion.
