Parks and open spaces help the air quality and temperature within cities. Grass, mulch, and other landscaping absorbs heat and sunlight that steel and concrete cannot. Parks also act as a gathering place for city visitors and residents.
Some cities are designed with green spaces in mind. The founder of Philadelphia wanted the city to have stretches of green space. The city has an extensive parks system, which residents are working to restore after a period of neglect.
Chicago struggled to find a way to incorporate green space into its tightly packed downtown. They moved commuter trains and a parking lot underground and built a park above it through a private-public partnership.
Neglected parks can become eyesores and hubs for criminal activity. Community groups help with park upkeep and maintenance.
Parks and green spaces have replaced the traditional town squares of cities as places were people gather. A gathering place is needed for a sense of community.

Eighty percent of our population lives in cities. But too few of our citizens have access to open space and public parks. City parks and open space improve our physical and psychological health, strengthen our communities, raise property values, and make our neighborhoods more attractive and desirable places to live and work in. This chapter highlights cities that have created green open space for the betterment of not only environmental health, but for economic viability as well.
