What is a Habitat? (01:40)

FREE PREVIEW

A habitat is the place where a plant or animal lives. It must meet the survival needs of the plant or animal. Shelters protect animals from predators.

Polar Regions (01:07)

The North and South Poles have a very cold climate. Animals have adapted to survive in the cold conditions; there are few plants.

Tundra (01:10)

The tundra is just south of the North Pole and contains no trees. Some plants have adapted and can survive the barren landscape. Animals like caribou and bears live on the tundra.

Desert (01:13)

Plants and animals adapt to survive with little water if they live in desert environments. Many can store water for long periods of time.

Grasslands (01:43)

Grasslands are open landscapes with few trees because of limited rainfall. Many grassland animals move fast to avoid predators.

Forest Habitats (03:23)

Forests can be coniferous, temperate, or rainforests. Plants and animals have adapted to absorb sunlight and hide from predators.

Water Habitats (01:47)

Freshwater habitats include rivers, lakes, and ponds. Saltwater habitats are oceans. Plants and animals have adapted survive in calm ponds or rough oceans.

Plant and animal life is unique to each area in the world because of the diversity among land regions. In this program viewers will learn about and come to value what each part of our world has to offer. Through studying the various habitats found on earth, students will develop an understanding and appreciation for the diversity that surrounds us. By doing this we can begin to teach people how to prevent further endangerment, or even extinction, of certain species. By viewing the video and discussing the concepts presented, students will enhance their knowledge about the habitats found on earth. Each habitat and region will be introduced and its properties discussed. After viewing Habitats, students will be able to: define habitat, appropriately use introduced vocabulary in writing and discussion, identify and list characteristics of various habitats found on Earth, and specify adaptations made by plants and animals in various habitats.
