See clips from several of David Lean's films. He is considered one of the most important directors in history.
Lean was known for his revolutionary editing techniques before he moved on to direct. His first work as sole director was "This Happy Breed," which bonded Lean and playwright Noel Coward. "Brief Encounter" was another play by Coward that was later adapted to film by Lean.
"Great Expectations" was adapted to film by Lean in 1946; many film critics believe this was the greatest Dickens film adaptation in cinematic history. In 1949, Lean brought the work of H.G. Wells to the screen with "The Passionate Friends." His first true story on the screen was "Madeleine."
"The Sound Barrier" was Lean's first large scale film; two bombers were used to film shots in the air. "Hobson's Choice" starred Charles Lawton. Lean later made films that included actors and settings from cultures outside of Britain, including his most renowned work "Lawrence of Arabia."
Lean adapted Boris Pasternak's novel "Doctor Zhivago" following its ban in Russia; he wanted to create a great romance for the screen following the success of "Lawrence of Arabia." Experts talk about "A Passage to India." Lean was influenced by silent movies and used the best technology for all of his films.
