Minelli: Career Beginnings (03:20)

Experts describe Minnelli's upbringing, his parent's artistic occupations, and theatrical work. After moving to New York City, he was hired at the Radio City Music Hall as a set designer. Ethel Waters and Lena Horn starred in "Cabin in the Sky."

"Meet Me in St. Louis" (04:34)

Minnelli convinced Judy Garland to star in the film about the trials and successes of a family over the course of a year. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is a famous song from the musical. Garland and Minelli married and worked on "The Clock."

"Ziegfeld Follies" (04:00)

Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire starred in the film and have a dance-of. The film is an anthology of great musical numbers, directed by seven different people. Subsequent movies include "Yolanda and the Thief" and ""Undercurrent."

Minelli directed Garland's numbers in "Till the Clouds Roll By" and "The Pirate," costarring Kelly. Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, and Elizabeth Taylor starred in "Father of the Bride" and "Father's Little Dividend."

Minelli reunited with Kelly. The film is about an American soldier and his best friend who fall in love with the same girl.

Minelli directed a film about Hollywood. "The Band Wagon" is a musical about musicals, starring Astaire, Cyd Charisse, and Leslie Caron. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz starred in "The Long, Long Trailer."

Minelli collaborated with Kelly for the last time. Bonnie Greer describes how the director did not even try to make the film look as if it was not filmed on a stage, because MGM refused to allow the production to travel to Scotland. Minelli directed "Kismet," "The Cobweb," "Lust for Life," and "Tea and Sympathy."

The offbeat romantic comedy "Designing Woman" pairs Lauren Bacall with Gregory Peck. Caron, Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jourdan starred in the Lerner and Loewe musical about a young girl who is training to be a courtesan.

"The Reluctant Debutante" (04:34)

This films starred Sandra Dee; it is about a young American girl who visits her father in London. Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Shirley MacLaine starred in "Some Came Running." Martin and Minelli reunited for "Bells Are Ringing."

Minnelli's Final Films (05:57)

Minelli filmed "The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse," "Two Weeks in Another Town," "Goodbye Charlie," and "The Courtship of Eddie's Father," which flopped at the box office. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor starred in "The Sandpiper." A psychiatrist falls in love with one of Barbara Streisand past lives in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever."

Vincente Minnelli is known for directing many of MGM's classic musicals such as Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Gigi (1958), The Band Wagon (1953), and An American in Paris (1951), the Academy Award-winning masterpiece starring Gene Kelly. He also directed comedy classics Father of the Bride (1950) with Spencer Tracy and one of the great Hollywood melodramas: The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) starring Kirk Douglas, who he also directed in Lust for Life (1956).
