Introduction: Ridley Scott (01:58)
Director Ridley Scott started his career at BBC before launching a commercial production company at the age of 27. Hit movies include “Alien,” “Blade Runner,” “Gladiator,” “Black Hawk Down” and “Thelma and Louise.”
Scott’s father served with the British Royal Engineers during WWII; he moved the family to Germany after the war. Scott studied at the Hamburg College of Art before taking up film at the Royal College of Art and landing a job at BBC.
First Time Directing (03:19)
“The Duellists" was the first feature-length film Scott directed. Gerald Vaughan-Hughes wrote the screenplay and David Puttnam produced. Paramount Pictures agreed to make the film, but it was not a commercial success.
Finding Projects (04:03)
Among inspirations for Scott’s breakthrough films “Alien” and “Bladerunner” was “Heavy Metal” magazine artist Jean Giraud (Moebius). Scott enjoyed making “Thelma and Louise.”
The casting process was difficult for Scott. He met with a wide variety of actors for “Alien” before casting Sigourney Weaver. He and his crew digitally designed “Prometheus” before shooting.
On Set (02:47)
Scott was criticized for how visual his films were but he eventually realized he had an advantage. He started to develop his own style for dealing with actors. Among the most difficult films the director tackled is “Gladiator.”
Hollywood Confidential (03:18)
Harvey Keitel made gritty dramas with Martin Scorcese and was initially uncomfortable with playing a hussar in “The Duellists.” The budget for “Alien” nearly doubled after Scott presented story boards he had created to the film’s producer.
Favorite Films and Last Word (02:05)
Scott admires James Dean and John Wayne. Among his favorite directors are Orson Wells, Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman and David Lean. Filmmaking is more prolific; maintaining standards is difficult.
