Kamen attends music school, joins a band, and goes to London where he arranges concept albums. Kamen creates scores for "The Dead Zone," Brazil," "Highlander," "Lethal Weapon," and "Die Hard."

Hans Zimmer (08:49)

Music becomes a way for Zimmer to cope with the loss of his father. He works with The Buggles and views Stanley Myers as a mentor. Zimmer creates scores for British films, "Rain Man," "Black Rain," and "Driving Miss Daisy."

"Empire of the Sun" (02:41)

John Williams creates the score for Steven Spielberg's 1987 film. The music represents what is going on in the mind of Christian Bale's character.

Maurice Jarre (03:45)

Jarre works with samplers for the first time when creating the score for "No Way Out." He also composes the score for "Fatal Attraction."

John Barry (03:56)

Barry creates the score for "Jagged Edge," incorporating dark piano sounds and the synthesizer. He also scores "Out of Africa."

"Cinema Paradiso" (03:46)

Ennio Morricone creates the score for the 1988 Italian film. Techniques in the late 1980s allow composers to convey tension within the human mind.

A new name Alan Silvestri arrived with the Back to the Future trilogy starting in 1985 and James Cameron’s undersea sci fi epic The Abyss in 1989. Hans Zimmer scores Rain Man and Ridley Scott’s atmospheric thriller Black Rain (1988) set in Japan. Michael Kamen arrived with the thriller, The Dead Zone in 1983, followed by Die Hard in 1988. Maurice Jarre began a period of work in 1985 with Witness, Mad Max, No Way Out and Fatal Attraction.
