Ideas and Inspiration (03:05)

FREE PREVIEW

A quote by Coco Chanel sets the stage for the premise that fashion has to do with ideas that designers draw from many sources such as pop culture, other designers, and past fashion trends. Designers share ideas that came from unlikely sources.

Elements of Design (01:44)

The elements and principles of design are an important part of the process. These elements are line, shape, direction, size, texture, color, and value. Each of these is explained and illustrated.

Principles of Design (01:27)

The principles of design: balance, gradation, repetition, contrast, harmony, dominance and unity. Each is explained and illustrated.

Fashion Trends (01:08)

Predicting upcoming fashion trends is not always easy. Trendsetters are those designers who predict what people want.

Drawing Skills and Techniques (02:50)

Designers use a range of media to create drawings. Measurements are crucial to designing fashion. Designers who cannot draw must somehow capture their ideas and impressions. Collections are often unified by a theme.

Types and Purposes of Drawings (02:22)

Descriptive drawings may be annotated, and they can be used to source materials. Descriptive drawings can also be used to display the designs to clients, buyers, and pattern makers.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) (01:41)

CAD is useful to fashion designers because garments can be shaped according to stored templates. CAD can be used for pattern making and eliminates the need to make multiple mock-ups of garments. CAD reduces fabric waste.

Final Production (03:58)

Fabric sampling and sources are important to the final process. Other essential elements in final production are tolling, cutting lists, and pattern-making.
