Active Learning Explained (03:39)
FREE PREVIEW
Active learning is all about motivation and the will to learn from experiences. It is closely linked with self regulation, which is partly about the ability to be in control of your own learning. Children want to be in control and to act autonomously, the need to have the freedom to act independently.

Children who are becoming self-regulated will be drawn towards things they can't quite do or understand. These children are persistent and curious. When children are fully immersed in an activity and are not easily distracted, this is described as being in a state of flow.

Self-regulation Through Exploration (02:32)
Children learn best when they are allowed to explore and experiment, when the learning is shared, and when they are encouraged to persist in their efforts.
Persistence in Face of Difficulties (05:06)
Children can be encouraged to be persistent in the face of difficulties by providing interesting resources, and an environment that is stimulating and encourages challenge. Encouraging children to persevere in the face of difficulty is more beneficial than praising them for their successes.
How to Praise Children (03:20)
Praise should be specific and relate to the way the child has contributed to his own learning. Saying well done or good boy as rewards from adults do not let the child know what he is doing well.
